Most pools don't go wrong all at once. They drift — a bit out of balance, a bit more each week — until one hot fortnight turns it green.

Water testing & balancing
Shop strip-tests miss the things that actually matter. A pool can read fine for chlorine and still be impossible to keep clear because the stabiliser or alkalinity is wrong.

Leave a pool a fortnight in a Sydney summer and it goes green. Tipping in more chlorine rarely fixes it, because the water is usually too far out of balance for chlorine to do anything.
