Heavy tree cover means constant leaf load and pools that don't get much direct sun. Shaded, cool water holds algae differently and needs balancing rather than just dosing. Steep blocks make access the other headache.

Larger in-ground pools on sloping blocks. Plenty of heating, and often long runs of plumbing.

Most pools don't go wrong all at once. They drift — a bit out of balance, a bit more each week — until one hot fortnight turns it green.

That grey-brown band around the waterline is calcium and body oils. It hardens over time, and the longer it sits the harder it is to take off without damaging the tile.

Leave a pool a fortnight in a Sydney summer and it goes green. Tipping in more chlorine rarely fixes it, because the water is usually too far out of balance for chlorine to do anything.
